What Do I Tell People Who Say Facebook Ads Don’t Work?

What Do I Tell People Who Say Facebook Ads Don’t Work?

I get people asking me all the time how I deal with clients, potential clients, and others who don’t believe in the value of Facebook ads or they don’t think Facebook ads work because they’ve tried them before and didn’t have any success. Phil Graham Facebook Ads

This video is what I tell them, and has a great analogy you can use if you ever have potential clients that don’t believe in digital marketing.

Bottom line: Of course Facebook ads work, but you’ve got to know how to do it correctly.

Why Most People Lose Money With Facebook Ads & How To Fix It

Why Most People Lose Money With Facebook Ads & How To Fix It

Facebook Ad StrategyI wanted to give some actionable value here when it comes to Facebook ads, because I see that most people are struggling with them and then thinking that Facebook ads don’t work.

First, Facebook ads can work extremely well, when they are done right. Most people do them wrong and get frustrated when it doesn’t work and they lose money, which is totally understandable. Let’s fix that right now!

There are many elements to getting a positive ROI and making money with Facebook advertising, but one of the most important things, and the thing that 99% of people seem to get wrong is the audience targeting and messaging.

If you do everything else right, but get your targeting and messaging wrong, you will probably fail.

The big mistake most people make when it comes to audience targeting is that they target much too broad of an audience. For example, I see many people targeting entrepreneurs between 25-60 that have 1 interest, like being a Brendon Burchard or Tony Robbins fan. That is way, way too broad and you will most likely lose money doing it that way.

The best way to target an audience with Facebook ads is to start small (you don’t need to spend a ton of money) and test small audience segments to see what converts and what doesn’t. You take what converts and scale it up like crazy, and you take what doesn’t and either change it, or get rid of it.

When you do it this way, you are making decisions based on data, not guesses or hopes, and everything changes.

Segmenting Suggestions:
I would recommend segmenting your audiences by age, sometimes gender, motivation, and multiple interest levels. I also would highly recommend segmenting and targeting your competitors fans too.

For example, a Facebook ad client found out that 35-45 year old Moms who do yoga and like Oprah and Marie Forleo was the targeting combination that worked and brought in 30 times better results than many of the other audiences. If all they did was broad ads, we would have never been able to hone in on that and scale it like we can now. It’s a game changer.

One other thing I’ll mention when it comes to big mistakes with Facebook ads is that you shouldn’t treat it like Google Adwords. Your Facebook ads should be very different than a more direct ad approach that you might take with Adwords.

I hope this helps, Facebook ads can work incredibly well and I think it’s the best value and best way to get results in this day and age and I hate seeing good people (like you!) struggling with it.

3 Common Facebook Ad Mistakes That Even Some Pro’s Still Make

3 Common Facebook Ad Mistakes That Even Some Pro’s Still Make

3 Facebook Ad MistakesAs someone who runs a “done for you” Facebook ad agency in Seattle, I see lots of Facebook ad mistakes and there are over 50 different ones that I’ll be pointing out on my blog in the coming weeks. In this post, I’ll cover three of the most common mistakes people make with their Facebook ads.

These three mistakes are all MAJOR ones that could literally mean the difference between making money with Facebook ads versus flushing your money down the toilet and claiming (incorrectly) that Facebook ads don’t work (they definitely do work)!

Ready to learn the 3 Facebook ad mistakes and how you can avoid them? Watch my video, or read the post below!

user-groups-filled-100-1Facebook Ad Mistake #1 – Bad Audience Targeting

This is a mistake that MOST people make, even many of the advertising and marketing “pro’s” out there.

When doing Facebook ads, you should always segment and target your audience properly. In fact, you could do EVERYTHING else right, but if you get the audience and targeting wrong, you could fail and lose money.

Most people doing Facebook ads use audience targeting that is way too general and broad. When this happens, not only does it usually not work at all, and not only do you lose money, it also prevents you from seeing what actually DOES work (which you could then scale).

For example, let’s say you are an ecommerce store selling women’s clothing. Most people would target broad groups of women who may like certain stores, brands, and/or fashion designers. The problem is, not only will that targeting not work very well, even if PART of that broad audience did respond well to your Facebook ad, you wouldn’t know WHICH part to scale and you’d most likely lose money trying to figure it out.

Alternatively, if you had very specific, segmented targeting, and ads that were specific to each segment, you would know exactly what was profitable and what wasn’t, and you could take what’s working and scale it like crazy.

Sticking with our women’s e-commerce example, what if you ad/product/message struck a nerve with 35 year old women who like Oprah, do yoga, and drink tea? You would never know that if your targeting was too broad and you would fail, and flush lots of money down the toilet in the process, all while probably claiming that Facebook ads don’t work (but they do when you do it RIGHT!).

Summary: Be very specific and segmented when it comes to audience targeting with your Facebook ads. Create lots of different audience targets to test out what works and what doesn’t on a small scale, while spending a little amount of money, and then when you find out what works, scale it up like crazy and profit.

Facebook Ad Mistake #2 – Not Installing (or using) The Facebook Pixel

Using the Facebook pixel isn’t just smart marketing, it’s essential to your success. I’d still rate an email list as the #1 asset you should have (besides your knowledge, personality, and skill of course) but the Facebook pixel is a VERY CLOSE second, and in some cases, the pixel could be even MORE valuable and profitable than an email list!

I don’t have time in this blog post to go over all the reasons why you should be utilizing the Facebook pixel, I’ll do a video about that soon, but in the meantime, just take my word for it that you are crazy and insane if you don’t have the pixel installed and running on your website, and make the commitment to get it done right now, even if you aren’t planning on running Facebook ads in the near future.

Having the Facebook pixel installed on your site allows you to easily communicate with your audience where they hang out most, which is social media sites like Facebook. Not only that, it’s amazing the targeting and detail you can get with pixel data.

For example, you could tell Facebook to show an ad only to people that have spent 30 minute or more on a certain page of your website in the past 30 days. Amazing right?

Here’s another one: You could tell Facebook to show an ad only to people that have visited your sales page, but did not make a purchase. How powerful is that?

There are so many variations and ways to profit from this, and remarketing via the FB pixel should be a big part of your marketing and sales strategy, especially if you like winning and making money.

For those reading this that already have their pixel installed, make sure you are using it by communicating and following up with your audience based on the actions they are, and aren’t taking on your website. This is a game changer.

For those that need to install the pixel, I’ve got some great news. It’s gotten much easier to do, especially if you are running a WordPress website/blog. I have written a blog post and recorded a video showing you how to install and test the Facebook pixel on a WordPress site.

youtube-play-96Facebook Ad Mistake #3 – Using Youtube Videos On Your Landing Page

This one is a biggie that MANY of the pro’s still get wrong. Do not, ever, under any circumstances use a Youtube video on any page or post that you pay to send traffic to! Please repeat that 10 times so it sticks!

Here is the deal, when people (that you pay for) click over to your site, whether you are sending them to an opt-in page, landing page, blog post, homepage, whatever, and they see your video, and it’s a Youtube video, guess what many of these people do; they click the little Youtube logo or title to watch your video on Youtube instead and then 15 seconds later, they see related videos on the side of flying cat memes that they click on and have completely forgotten about you and your message, and this is just someone you PAID to get to your website!

Don’t make this costly Facebook ad mistake. Instead, use something like Vimeo Pro, Wistia, or Amazon S3 to embed the video on your site.

Should you still do Youtube videos? Of course, heck yeah, I love Youtube, but keep the videos on Youtube and don’t put Youtube on your site. Same thing with Facebook video.

Whether you are making one or two of these Facebook advertising mistakes or all three, when you fix them, you’ll be ahead of most and you’ll be giving yourself a much better chance at making money with Facebook ads and being ultra profitable, unlike the others.

The Ultimate Guide To Installing Your Facebook Pixel

The Ultimate Guide To Installing Your Facebook Pixel

It used to be pretty complicated and “techy” to install the Facebook pixel code on your own website, but the good news is, you can now do it quickly and easily (on your WordPress site) without even having to use a plugin and with no technical skills at all when you follow along this blog post and video!

The Power of the Pixel

Some people believe that Facebook Pixels are even more valuable than an email list because they are SO very powerful! I think that you need both, but far too many people either don’t have a Facebook pixel installed at all, or if they do, they either don’t use it, or use it wrong.

There are many great ways to communicate to your audience with the Facebook pixel.

For example, you can target people (with an ad) that visited your shopping cart or sales page, but did NOT purchase. Alternatively, you could target someone who never visited your sales page but maybe read a blog post of yours and then left.

How you follow up and communicate with those two examples SHOULD be very different right? You’d want to talk to the person who almost purchased very differently than someone who just read a blog post for a minute and then left your site.

Problem is, most people have general ads, content, and messages that they send to EVERYONE, which doesn’t work very well. When you use the Facebook Pixel correctly, you can segment and target your message to your audience perfectly, and do it based on THEIR actions! It’s incredible!

Also, don’t think of using the Facebook pixel just in terms of ads; you can also push highly targeted, helpful, educational, and specific content out to your audience via ads as well. So many powerful options. Make sure you are using them in your business!

How To Install The Facebook Pixel On Your WordPress Website – The Ultimate Step-By-Step Guide

There are two parts to this guide: I have a video that shows you step-by-step how to setup Google Tag Manager and install your Facebook pixel, and for those who prefer to read and see images, I have the entire guide detailed below the video. Enjoy, and share it with people you think could use it!

To install your Facebook pixel, I recommend using Google Tag Manager which is free. It’s amazing because once you set it up, you’ll be able to easily not only install the Facebook pixel, but also other things (like Google Analytics, and other variations of the Facebook pixel) quickly and easily without even having to deal with the code on your site. It’s also great because you won’t be needing to use a plugin to install your Facebook pixel; plugins can cause your site to slow down and they constantly need to be updated so it’s always a great thing when you can do something like this without a plugin.

Step 1:

Go to TagManager.Google.com and either sign in, or create a free account if you don’t already have one.

Step 2:

Click “Create Account” (you will need 1 account for each website you have). In your new account, you will want to give it a name, and then setup the container.

The container is where you put the URL of your website. (see picture below for example). You don’t put in the http://www, just the domain name itself.

Below that, you should choose “Web” and then click on the “Create” button.

Step 3:

Google Tag Manager now gives you the code that you need to put on your website. Don’t be scared, you don’t have to know what any of this means, I’ll walk you through step-by-step and it’ll be super easy to do ☺

Looking at the code (see image below), you’ll see that there is code that needs to go into the <head> section of your website and code that needs to go into the <body> section.

Facebookpixelinstall2

Go ahead and highlight and copy the code that goes into the <head> section. Also, highlight and copy the code that goes into the <body> section and paste them both into a text file.

Step 4:

Login to your WordPress website and navigate to Appearance/Editor. (Keep Tag Manager open when you do this, just open a new tab for this part).

FBpixel3

Once you are on the editor screen, on the right hand side, you need to find and click on the “header.php” file to open it up.

Facebook pixel Google tag manager

Note: This will work regardless of what theme you are using. Your header.php file may look a little different than mine in the screenshot, and that’s ok.

Once you have the header.php file on the screen, scroll down to the beginning of the <head> section. On that line, hit enter and paste your “head” code from Google Tag Manager right under the <head> tag.

tagmanagerpixel

Note: There are two head tags so make sure you do this under the very first one which is near the top.

Next, get the <body> code that you copied from Google Tag Manager and put into a text file. Highlight and copy that <body> code.

Still on the header.php screen, scroll down to the first <body> tag. It will start right at the end of the second <head> tag. Go to the end of that first body tag line and hit enter to give yourself a space right under it. Now, paste the <body> code right there. Make sure you are pasting the <body> code and not the <head> code that you already pasted in.

Note: your body tag may look a little different than the image below, it may start with something like this: <body>.

fbpixel6

Lastly, scroll down and click the “Update File” button. We now have done everything we need to do on our website and need to go back to Tag Manager to finish up.

Step 5:

Back in Tag Manager, your screen should still look like this:

Facebookpixelinstall2

Now, click the “Ok” button AND then the “Publish” button in the upper right hand corner. It will give you a summary and you’ll need to click “Publish” a second time, and then click continue. You now have successfully installed Google Tag Manager!

Let’s test it! To test and make sure you have Google Tag Manager installed correctly, you can download the Tag Assistant Chrome extension here. You can also watch my video in this blog post to see how I test to ensure Tag Manager is installed correctly.

Step 6:

Now, we need to grab the Facebook Pixel Code now. Login to your Facebook account and click on “Ads Manager” and then click on “Ads Manager” at the top (again), and then click on “Pixels”.

On that screen, there should be a button that says “Actions”. Click on that and then click on “View Pixel Code”.

facebookpixelcodecopy

Now, highlight your pixel code and copy it to the clipboard or you can copy into a text file if you’d like.

Step 7:

Back in Tag Manager, click on the box that says “New Tag”.

Facebookpixeltag8

Give it a name at the very top. I call it “Facebook Pixel”. Next, click on the “Tag Configuration” box and choose the tag type. You will want to select “Custom HTML”.

fbpixelhowto

Next, paste the Facebook pixel code that you copied into the Custom HTML box.

tagmanagerfacebookpixel10

Next, scroll down and click on “Triggering” and then click on the “All Pages” text.

tag11fbtag12fb

Next, click “Save” in the upper right, and then on the next screen, make SURE you also click “Publish” in the upper right. Many people forget to click publish and it won’t work until you publish it.

Note: You will have to click “publish” twice and “continue” once and then it will be fully published.

That’s it, we are done! If you followed these instructions, you now have your fully functional Facebook Pixel installed on your WordPress website! Great job!

Testing The Facebook Pixel To Make Sure It’s Installed Properly

There is an easy way to test it and make sure your Facebook pixel is installed properly. Facebook has a great little tool that is a Google Chrome extension and it’s called the Facebook Pixel Helper. You can download it here.

Once you load and activate the Facebook pixel helper Chrome extension, go to your website, refresh the page in your Chrome browser, and click on the little Facebook Pixel Helper icon on your toolbar and it should verify that it sees your pixel installed (see image below).

facebookpixelhelpertool

Congratulations, you did it! In reading this, it may seem like a lot, but in reality, it only takes about 5 minutes to do and now you will have the ability to communicate and follow up with customers and prospects based on actions they take (or don’t take) on your website!
